5 Facts We Know About Obama’s College Years

President Barack Obama’s love of secrecy has, by this point, become a favorite rhetorical cudgel for the President’s opponents. And perhaps no set of documents is more coveted due to its total unavailability than the President’s college records. These documents have sparked all sorts of conspiracy theories.

To be fair, Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush, didn’t release his college records either. Those only became public after a leak from inside Yale University, not due to any consent on the part of the former President. All the same, Obama’s time at Columbia is filled with gaps, such as the question of whether his classmates really knew him, or the issue of his missing thesis, et cetera. At times, it is enough to make you wonder just what we do know about President Obama’s college years, hence the rush to speculate among those who oppose the president. If only there were something we knew, these seekers of truth cry.

Well, look no further. Below are five facts regarding Obama’s college years at Columbia, that are a starting point for the discussion.

#5. Barack Obama Did Attend Columbia University

Cathie Currie, who currently teaches social psychology at Adelphi University, recalled Obama joining her group occasionally to play pick-up soccer games on the lawn outside the library. She was a graduate student at the time, and Obama was an undergrad.

He was a good soccer player, she said, even though basketball was his primary athletic passion. Obama also made an impression with his maturity and wisdom, she said. He talked about things like government for all the people, she said. In fact, Currie assumed because of Obama’s heady conversation that he was a graduate student as well.

Currie isn’t surprised that he was not widely-remembered by fellow Columbia classmates. “My sense of it was that he was keeping a low profile,” Currie said.

He seemed like someone who had made a decision to prioritize his studies, she said. “We’d ask him to go out with us for beers after soccer,” she said. “He seemed like he wanted to, but then he’d step back and say, ‘Sorry, I’m going to the library.’”

Moreover, Columbia was advertising President Obama’s status as a Columbia alum as early as 2005, before his run for the Presidency was even being talked up. He also is listed in the Columbia University Student Directory from the 1982-1983 school year.

Finally, one of the few pieces of Obama’s writing we have found from that period is an article in the Columbia Sundial, a now defunct weekly magazine, on nuclear disarmament dated March 10, 1983. If Obama was not attending the school, it is very unlikely that he would have bothered reading its publications, much less write an article for one of them.

#4. Barack Obama moved addresses while at Columbia

Two addresses are listed for Obama during his time in New York, one of which he shared with his aforementioned roommate Phil Boerner. The apartment Obama shared with Boerner is listed as Apartment 3E, located at 142 West 109th St, in New York.

The New York Times reported that Obama gave up this particular address due to “lack of heat.” Boerner explains in an essay for Columbia’s alumni magazine:

Barack has said that he spent a lot of time in the library while at Columbia and one reason for this was that our apartment had irregular heat, and we didn’t enjoy hanging out there once the weather got cold. The radiators in our apartment were either stone cold, or, less often, blasted out such intense heat that we had to open the windows and let in freezing air just to cool things down. When the heat wasn’t on, we sometimes sat with sleeping bags or blankets wrapped around ourselves and read our school books. We also didn’t have regular hot water and sometimes used the Columbia gym for showers.

He later moved to Apartment 6A at 339 East 94th St, where he spent his senior year, according to the Times, which also noted that telephone directories from the early 1980s listed “B. Obama” at 339 East 94th Street. This address also features in Obama’s memoir in which he writes about chatting with his Puerto Rican neighbors about the Knicks or gunshots they had heard in the neighborhood.

#3. Obama‘s classmates didn’t see him as the type to become President

Obama‘s behavior at college wasn’t exactly what one would expect from a future President of the United States.Two different acquaintances of Obama’s speak to his introverted, eccentric and sensitive character – a far cry from the sort of gregarious bombast one expects from Presidential candidates. First, from Phil Boerner’s essay on Obama:

Barack wasn’t thinking about becoming President when he was in college; he wanted to be a writer. Barack is a good man — some might even call him a saint for tolerating my beginning banjo playing. Based on my six years of knowing him in college and the years immediately after, I can vouch that Barack is a man of character, and I trust him to do the right things when he is President.

And from a 2008 Associated Press story:

Andrew Roth knew Obama at Occidental and in New York. He speaks bluntly: “The thought, believe me, never crossed my mind that he would be our first black president.”

And yet, here he is, on the brink of the Democratic nomination. And he’s gotten there with the help of some of those friends from so long ago.

None of this is to say that Obama wasn’t political. As later points will show, he was that in spades. But Presidential material? Perhaps tellingly, few if any saw the White House in his cards.

#2. Obama was a strong supporter of nuclear disarmament

Remember Michael Baron, the Columbia professor who remembers Obama and corroborates his time at Columbia? Well, Prof. Baron seems to remember more than just President Obama’s presence in his courses. Apparently, the future president was quite the foreign policy buff and earned a solid A from Baron. Moreover, Obama is alleged to have written a lengthy “thesis” paper under Baron’s supervision – a thesis which is itself the subject of speculation, since there is no copy of it on file. Indeed, Baron has apparently been frantically searching his own personal files trying to find a copy.

What Baron does remember is the topic of the paper, which, when combined with over evidence, tells us quite a bit about college-age Obama’s particular academic interests and beliefs:

His former professor, Michael Baron, recalled in an interview with NBC News that Obama easily aced the year-long class. Baron described the paper as a “thesis” or “senior thesis” in several interviews, and said that Obama spent a year working on it. Baron recalls that the topic was nuclear negotiations with the Soviet Union.

“My recollection is that the paper was an analysis of the evolution of the arms reduction negotiations between the Soviet Union and the United States,” Baron said in an e-mail. “At that time, a hot topic in foreign policy circles was finding a way in which each country could safely reduce the large arsenal of nuclear weapons pointed at the other … For U.S. policy makers in both political parties, the aim was not disarmament, but achieving deep reductions in the Soviet nuclear arsenal and keeping a substantial and permanent American advantage. As I remember it, the paper was about those negotiations, their tactics and chances for success. Barack got an A.”

Baron said that, even if he could find a copy of the paper, it would likely disappoint Obama’s critics. “The course was not a polemical course, it was a course in decision making and how decisions got made,” he said. “None of the papers in the class were controversial.”

Fortunately for Baron, a more polemic and controversial piece of writing by President Obama does survive – namely, the aforementioned article he wrote in the Columbia Sundial magazine.

Human Events summarized the article fairly accurately this way:

Obama deems the Reagan era defense buildup a “distorted priority” and “dead end track.”

Writing in the midst of the Cold War, Obama was nevertheless oblivious to the threat the Soviet Union then posed to the United States. Indeed, he does not even mention the Soviet Union in his article. Instead, Obama blames — you guessed it — America and its “twisted” world view for the “growing threat of war.”

If only Americans would change their thinking, he argues, the threat would subside. Give re-education a chance.

“Most students at Columbia do not have first hand knowledge of war,” he begins. “Military violence has been a vicarious experience, channeled into our minds through television film, and print . . . We know that wars have occurred, will occur, are occurring, but bringing such experiences down into our hearts and taking continual, tangible steps to prevent war, becomes a difficult task.”

That’s why campus peaceniks are so important. “Two groups on campus, Arms Race Alternatives (ARA) and Students Against Militarism (SAM) work within these mental limits to foster awareness and practical action necessary to counter the growing threat of war. Though the emphasis of the two groups differ, they share an aversion to current government policy.

“These groups, visualizing the possibilities of destruction and grasping the tendencies of distorted national priorities, are throwing their weight into shifting America off the dead end track.”[…]

For Obama, the only thing wrong with the nuclear freeze movement is that it’s not ambitious enough. One “is forced to wonder whether disarmament or arms control issues, severed from economic and political issues, might be another instance of focusing on the symptoms of a problem instead of the disease itself.

Based on this description, it’s fair to conclude that Obama was a supporter of nuclear disarmament and a critic of the Reagan-era Defense buildup. Indeed, Obama sounds almost like a 60′s draft dodger in places of the piece, comparing student groups that are opposed to selective service registration to antiwar thinkers like Henry David Thoreau, Thomas Jefferson and Walt Whitman. Grandiose stuff, and also consistent with the President’s love of high flown rhetoric.

#1. Obama attended at least one socialist conference while at Columbia

The evidence for this one comes straight from the horse’s mouth – namely, Obama himself. On page 122 of “Dreams From My Father,” one discovers this passage (emphasis added):

Political discussions, the kind that at Occidental had once seemed so intense and purposeful, came to take on the flavor of the socialist conferences I sometimes attended at Cooper Union or the African cultural fairs that took place in Harlem and Brooklyn during the summers — a few of the many diversions New York had to offer, like going to a foreign film, or ice-skating at Rockefeller Center.

This is a quite candid admission by Obama, not least of all because it doesn’t appear to be him stretching the truth at all, unlike with other passages in his memoir. The New York Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) did, indeed, hold a conference at the architecture school Cooper Union in April of 1983, when Obama was still a senior. National Review contributor Stanley Kurtz, in his book “Radical In Chief,” documents there being precisely no such other events held by the DSA, and fingers Obama’s name on a DSA mailing list, as well as other material that suggests Obama preregistered for another such event. Obama‘s specifically named venue lends credence to the idea that he attended the 1983 Socialist Scholars’ Conference. To quote Kurtz:

Evidence strongly indicates that Cooper Union was not a regular location for socialist conferences, but was, on the contrary, a onetime venue. It was chosen as a site to attempt to revive the lapsed tradition of Socialist Scholars Conferences because of the Marx centennial, and its success led to a series of smaller socialist speaking events at CUNY Graduate Center, and full-scale socialist conferences at the Borough of Manhattan Community College.

Given all this, Obama’s reference to “socialist conferences” at Cooper Union surely means that we can reliably place him at the April 1983 Cooper Union Socialist Scholars Conference.

It should be noted that none of this is to imply that Obama holds the same views now that he held in college. Many people mature past their collegiate political views, though Kurtz’s book argues that Obama has not done so.

However, given that the President’s ideology did incline this way back then (even if it doesn’t anymore), then one can see where the Obama campaign might want to avoid further scrutiny of Obama’s time in college, since it would bolster (however unfairly) the narrative that the President is a dyed-in-the-wool Left wing radical. As Newsrealblog puts it:

The conferences in question were presented by the Democratic Socialists of America, self-described as the largest socialist organization in the country. Though there’s no specific mention or evidence of Obama attending any of these conferences, Kurtz has found Obama’s name on the organization’s conference mailing lists from that time frame. Kurtz also draws a conclusion that since the 1983 conference, timed with the anniversary of the death of Karl Marx, was practically a who’s-who of the American far Left, Obama would no doubt have been there.

At these conferences, Obama is certain to have had exposure to some scholars and philosophers who would influence his life in extremely consequential ways. The conferences featured speakers like Frances Fox Piven, whose strategy for collapsing capitalism made her a darling of the Left, and James Cone, who devised the notion of Black Liberation Theology.

The conferences also featured workshops like “Poverty In America,” “Social Issues,” “Black Theology and Marxist Thought,” “Race and Class in Marxism,” and “The Case For Transitional Reform.” (Yep, the conferences sure sound like a great way to spend time in New York.) Many of these workshops centered around the concepts of Alinskyite community organizing and working from within the system to push the political direction of the country toward the Left, to socialism.

How many more articles like that could be written if Obama’s college transcripts showed him regularly taking courses on this kind of material, or even one or two? Even one such article, however flimsy its substance, is probably too many for the Obama campaign.

Nevertheless, Obama’s time at Columbia is not a complete cipher. More information is desirable, to be sure, but the rush to find out more should not obscure the interesting elements of what we already know.

Transcripts would be a start but we all need to see his applications to these college. I would like to know if he entered college as a foreign student. We all know his idealogy, I’m sure his papers (if any) would reflect his socialist views. If he enterd college as a foreign national or if he entered as a citizen of the U.S. I want to know.

The Obama transcripts will reveal that Obama entered Occidental College, Columbia University, and Harvard University as a foreign student. His locked-away passport records will verify this.

I attended college as an undergraduate and as a graduate during the times that Obama attended college and it was common knowledge that foreign students were given waiver after waiver (fees, tuition, and grades).

It will one day be proven that Obama lied about being a foreign student so that he could attend college. Then it will be up to conservative scholars to expose him, expunge his misdeeds as a Senator and President, rewrite history, and go after Pelosi, Reid, et al, who VERIFIED that he was an American citizen, and prosecute them all.

To back up my previous comments, go back and check out the autobiographical book, “The Penkovsky Papers,” by Col. Oleg Penkovsky, a Soviet NKVD defector to the United States back in the 60s/70s. Col.Penkovsky provided details on how a Soviet agent would be entering the U.S. as an American citizen (youth), and climb the educational and political ladders to become a “mole” who would “take down” this great nation by installing Marxist principles.

Back in the 60s/70s, the Soviets referred to this mole as “Yuri.” The Kevin Costner/Gene Hackman movie, “No Way Out ” used this very theme, except the movie version featured “Yuri” (played by Costner) as a Naval officer assigned to the Pentagon.

Barack Hussein Obama is the Marxist “Yuri.”

There was an article written about him by his publicist stating he was a foreign student. There is evidence that this is probably the case. In order to attend Indonesian public schools you must be a citizen of Indonesia. I believe he was BORN here, but renounced his citizenship and became Indonesian. Not sure if he ever changed it back (thus the social security card issues).

I’ve never heard of anyone demanding college transcripts from a president until Obama took office. That doesn‘t mean it hasn’t happened, I just haven’t seen calls for it. I’d love to see them too because of all the speculation, but I really don’t think it matters a great deal. We know what Obama is about based on his policies and EO’s. That in itself is enough to want him out of office.

I think the problem with young adults today ‘and i use the term lightly’ is they never learn about war. They think that by talking it out with some of these loons war can be averted! Strength deters wars not causes.

The points presented here by TheBlaze are pretty thin as evidence of BO being a student at Columbia.
Most of it should be defined as hear say and the remainder is a stretch to link BO to Columbia. Definitely expects the reader to accept somethings on faith. If one had applied for a position at a business, and that business was wanting validation you attended a university listed on your resume the evidence provided here on the Blaze simply wouldn’t fly.
My reply is to the Blaze but I don’t see an obvious reply space.

Selective Service records and the Social Security card issue alone should be a red flag for anyone vetting this President. Now take the totality of all of those issues plus the birth certificate, all college transcrpts and his own information supplied in his autobiographies should have left the Democratic Party plus the media with enough to void his candidacy. However this was not the case, hmmm, is the deck stacked against American’s and who manipulated those involved? The truth shall prevail? soon I hope.

Obama ia a disgrace to my country and for all it is suppose to represent. My conteniton is that it serves obama’s interest not to have the economy improve. You see the more he can make people dependent upon his handouts they will vote for him. Its the same approach as feeding starving people.. The gang in washington are all self serving for the most part. They will say and do anything for a vote. The back room dealings have been going on for years. And, the only way to stop this is possibly limited term in office. Obama and his henchmen and corrupt union are nothing more than chicago thugs. He is a pon and not qualified to run anything. All his records are sealed etc. He has sold the american people a bill of goods. Like hitler. I precict he will win re-election. He is going to buy it just like the kennedys. The miniorities, unions and people like soros the big money guys will win. Truly tragic. Our enemies just have to sit back and wait. America is destroying ourselves from within. And, people like obama with the help of those around him will see to it.

The bottom line is that is a no win situation for Mr Romney. I don‘t know what people are looking for in Mr Obama’s past from over 30 years ago will help when we don’t know what is in those tax
returns. This looks like a “witch hunt” against our President but could easily backfire. It seems like people here just want to attack the President without any concern for the election.

I have posted this earlier but I have not seen it so I will post it again. Everything you ever wanted to know about President Obama’s sealed records.

student since his high scholl transcripts were from Hawaii. Either way I
don’t think the people care. As far as his passport here is your answer

Obama’s passport. There’s no reason to think Obama used anything
but the then-current version of his U.S. passport when he traveled to
Pakistan as a student in 1981. Some who questioned Obama’s birthplace
made baseless claims that Pakistan had banned U.S. citizens from
visiting in 1981, and speculated that he must have used an Indonesian
passport. But they were quite wrong. There was no such travel ban.
In fact, the New York Times published a travel piece that year
describing the author’s own visit to Lahore, and the U.S. consul later
wrote a letter to the Times saying he would “welcome an influx of
Americans” and giving advice on how to make the journey.

When dealing with despicable enemies, after every measure has been taken & failed,
the only option left IS war & it is always the last option.”

So, Oblameo thinks he can solve everything peacefully.
He can’t even deal with our most trusted allies in peaceful, mannerly ways.
The WAR he chooses is class warfare, he’s divided this country, in every way,

What does a transcript really matter. So what if he made some C‘s or B’s might just mean he’s not a robot memorizing info just to past tests. And what does it matter if he used his dual citizenship to help a poor boy pay for college. He didn’t kill anyone to do it and he came out pretty successful for a young man whether you like him or not. A little creative admission work.

Scuttle butt says Obamas tuition was paid for by the Saudi Royal family which would explain why he bowed down to the King in his first visit to the country as POTUS. I would also speculate that the trip to Pakistan was used as the “contact” point for the Saudis to evaluate this person as to his worthiness to recieve funding a few years later.

I can’t prove this and it could be 100% wrong but this scenario seems to explain some rather odd behavior patterns that came to light during the early days of this admin (The Cairo speech, the reset with Russia, the really odd photo of Obama bowing to Saudi King etc…).

Let’s not forget that the HI building that houses passport records was broken into …the data taken ( a specific week and year was stolen) happened to include Obamas application etc…a coincidence ? I doubt it.

The truth is the general public has nothing from this mans past other than second or third hand heresay, very few concrete hard copes of anything verfiable as legit and yet those that question this appalling lack of a paper trail are labelled as fringe lunatics. Really….the lunatics IMO are the ones that swallow the MSM line that this man is who he says he is (which in reality is a composite he himself created with the help of leftist ghost writers).

Transcripts would be great, so would passport records. I lived in Djakarta Indonesia when Obama was there and I went to the international school where all American students went. Obama went to the Indonesian school and only Indonesian nationals were allowed to go to those schools. Makes me wonder why he didn’t go to the international school. Could have been the cost.

What has Romney said or done that makes you think that he’ll ease the stress on our liberties? Seems apparent to me that the only thing the, so called, right and left agree on is stripping us of our freedom. I mean, I’ll buy that Romney energy policy sounds better than Obamas and his call for ending stifling regulations on business is a step on the right direction, but he seems to have issues with freedom as much as Obama does. Civil liberties is the number one issue I think is important, which is why I’ve been saying I see no difference between the two candidates.

Just Angry- We have had 43 presidents, and probably we have lost a little freedom with each, but there has never been one that took away freedoms as fast as Obama. Romney, like anyone, has his faults, but this country cannot stand four more years of Obama. The best thing we can do on election day is vote for the best man. Then between elections, we must stay politically active and informed, while trying to find better and better representatives. There is no perfect candidate, just the best one.

Domestic policy will have to become Romneys focal point…without a strong economy the money for foreign policy forays is markedly reduced. The spending trajectory the Dems/Leftists have established as the new baseline is in no uncertain terms, ruinous, period. On Fact #4, just because Obama lived in the general area of Columbia University, what does the address tell us other than he lived near Columbia University? What were the specific dates he resided near Columbia University?
On Fact # 3 you offer NO evidence Boerner or Roth attended Columbia WITH Obama, just that they might have known him from the area can be equally inferred.
On Fact #2 Obama indeed had a single article in Sundial in March 1983. That places him there for one semester. Further, having just one educator of just one Remedial Political Activism Class (one for the backward and affirmative action slow ones needing a hand up) who handed out straight A’s on echoing his own sentiments, means very little. What of the other 3 semesters, and Obama’s other classes and grades? He did NOT get honors at Columbia, even if others did his homework. Excellent summation BrianRoy. . .not to mention, just because someone played soccer with him, does not conclusively prove he went to Columbia–he could have been simply hanging around the campus and joined in. Additionally, we know, simply by his actions in the WH, that he has socialist leanings. His transcripts are necessary not so much to see what type of grades he received, but to see what type of classes he took–were they only the classes required to receive a diploma or did he take additional/electives that appealed to his socialist side?

This is not a matter of privacy. . . The govt knows virtually everything about all of us regular folks, why then shouldn’t we know everything about the person in the WH who puports to be POTUS? If BHO has nothing to hide, then why continue to conceal his past?

You may be able to establish it as a fact that they said it, but establishing what they said to be fact, that requires a lot more work. This is a leftest tactic. I.E. One person saying what they wish to be true makes it a fact, regardless of video or other evidence. I read this article expecting facts. I ended up skimming it when it became apparent that the authors definition of facts was not the same as Websters.

I would not jump to the conclusion the Sundial article is genuine. Look at both the clipped image in the article above and the linked PDF. The title of the article, “Breaking the War Mentality” is not square and align to the picture above. In addition the title ‘bleeds’ into the column margin. Sure, this is a microfiche scanned image and other text is skewed but all other photos and text at least are skewed with the same perspective and line up. With the limited observation of this one source – if this is supposed to be proof that Obama attended Columbia then I would put forth the theory that these images are PhotoShop’ed to include the title with his name. Needs more research to make any conclusion.

I really don’t give a flip about his grades good or bad, What I do care about his his fraudulent activities, such as his stolen SS#, his fraudulently created selective service registration and the fraud committed if he entered any school in the US under a foreign student status. If he accepted foreign student grants then he either defrauded the government or he is actually a foreigner and illegal alien. Either way he belongs in prison. I want answers and I am sick and tired of Beck covering for him. I am also sick and tired of the ridicule of Joe Arpaio. The only man in this country with the guts to follow up on the Fraud In Chief. I would like to see his college records.

I suspect that he was given As by people like former professor, Michael Baron, because he had the right political views. I would like to see ACT or SAT scores, how he registered for school (foreigner or citizen) & who paid for his education. I would like to see his full college transcripts. Getting As in course where the faculty is intensely ideological & grading is subjective does not prove that one is intelligent.

I believe that Obama often use a sort of rope a dope tactic. He holds out on giving in formation. It would put him in a bad light if he gave out information on his record. He would seem m as average or subpar, which many people suspect.

The longer he holds out the more people speculate until there are enough that suspect the worst that his supported pick those comments & then when the record is released it is more about how they are wrong than how subpar or lackluster his past performances were.

All of Obama’s records need to be published. This is the man who has unsealed the divorce proceeedings of his opponent nd has put Senator “Carlton Ritz” Reid up to lying about Romney.

They are too busy trying to get Paul on the RNC ballot and bash Romney to understand what they are really doing to the United States of America–getting Obama re-elected, and ultimately destroying the country they claim to love.

Way to go, knuckleheads. By the time that you realize that libertarians are generally “on your side” and far more principled versions of yourself, it’ll be far too late. Keep up that antagonism, and my principled vote WILL go towards a candidate on the Libertarian ticket, or for a Ron Paul write-in. This “lesser of two evils” crap must stop for the sake of our country.

Good god, if it was a cia thing, his records would be fake, but fully released, the CIA/NSA does a great job of CYA and aren’t afraid to let anyone dig in them as much as they want. I was a co-op student for the NSA in college, and they provided me a back story, that isn’t true, but no matter how hard you dig, you will think it is.

As a U.S. citizen. And he has said that his Aunt helped with some of the tuition. The rest I’m sure he got the regular way, through student loans, Pell Grants, etc. Just the same way I paid for my schooling in the 1980s.

OK so what? The only reason OWEbama spent tons of money to seal these and other records is because they would prove that he is ineligible to be President of the U.S. Non-U.S. citizen and applied to Columbia as a FOREIGN student.
