Casino Night
The Palmdale Sheriff Boosters is raising money to build the “Palmdale Sheriff Station Memorial Patio”. This will be built in the back of the station so that families of the Deputies can barbecue and enjoy spending time together.

The kick-off event for this fundraising effort will be a casino night on March 17th 6pm at the Chimbole Cultural Center.

Tickets are $30 and if you send me a pm I’ll see that you get as many as you need. Bear in mind that we only have 300 tickets and they will go fast.

Just learned that, in addition to the Bullfrog Blues Band, Mario Rosales will be entertaining at this event. Can’t wait!

So, you’re potentially raising $9,000 for a patio. I have a few questions here:

1.) Will $9,000 be enough or will there be more funds needed? (these are lean economic times, you know)

2.) What’s wrong with using temporary tarps, like the vendors use at the fair and Thursday Night on The Square? You could probably buy very high quality ones for the amount raised that night. In addition, this would leave ample funds for benches and other things you’re going to need.

3.) Will any of the deputies from the sheriff’s station be participating. It isn’t a secret that, with overtime, many of them are making in excess of $100,000 a year. I would hope that some of them could take just a sliver of that and put it toward this also.

The entire project will cost approximately $150,000. Some of the labor and materials have already been pledged.

It is to be a permanent structure built to last the life of the station itself – estimated at about 50 years.

Next to the patio will be a Memorial Wall commemorating the Deputies whose lives have been lost in service to our community.

Most of the tickets will in fact be sold to station personnel which is why I said they would go fast.

We will also be selling bricks with the names of donors inscribed therein.

(I will post a photo of the artist’s rendering as soon as I figure out how)

If each deputy gave a small $2,000 dollars off the top of their income (which could be written off of their taxes, I suppose) there would be no need to have a “Casino Night”. “Casino Night” is simply another way for the “whose-who in the AV” crowd to gather and show off to eachother.

Matthew, I don’t think you understand the purpose of the Boosters.

I guess I shouldn’t even mention there is going to be a VIP card room?

I guess I just don’t get this. Why would someone pay $30 to stand in a crowded hall and listen to people who, for the most part, stand around and condescendingly congratulate themselves on all of their material accruments when this “patio dilemma” could easily be solved if the deputies just took, say…$2,000 of their income and put it toward the patio. If I want to spend St. Patrick’s night watching people make asses out of themselves, I’ll pay $5.00 and go to Schooners.

Here’s the deal Matthew.

Some people (believe it or not) actually WANT to support our Deputies and show them how much we appreciate all that they do. (If you are not aware of everything they do I invite you to take the Palmdale Partners Academy classes or the next Sheriff’s Citizen’s Academy)

If you’re not one of them then this event isn’t for you. Your absence will be a downer but we plan to have fun anyway.

Question: Besides the $30 for the ticket, what other funds may be necessary for the evening?

Patricia,

My absence won’t be a downer, but thanks. I am politically insignificant, I don’t make much money at all, I didn’t marry anyone with money and I don’t have anything to boast about. You, yourself, even told me in the past that I am not even a “fly in the ointment”. I understand the context you told me that in, but it has a double meaning also. The Antelope Valley is not for me. I have felt like a foreigner here for my entire life and I cannot wait to leave again.

$30 gets you $500 of play money, food, and entertainment. Alcoholic beverages (like the martini bar) will be extra. There may also be raffles.

Matthew, you are no more, or less, a “fly in the ointment” than I am. You determine the amount of significance you have, as do we all.

Rit – we are arranging the use of a ‘paddy wagon’ to see that patrons are safely driven home. (Although it is encouraged to always have a designated driver)

CJ – prizes will be announced as soon as I know what they are.
